HARDIN CO., Ill. - An Evansville oil company has been issued a permit to drill for oil in an "extinct" volcano in southern Illinois.
John O. Schofield Oil in Evansville was issued a permit from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and will be using a Carmi oil operator, Geo. N. Mitchell Drilling of Carmi, to drill at the location known as Hicks Dome in Hardin County.
The permit was issued after public input was called for - and ostensibly considered - this past April.
Despite objections which were, according to those who issued them, never properly nor fully addressed, the permit was issued November 17. IDNR, unfortunately, is known for asking for public input/objections, then pooh-poohing them and going ahead with their plans anyway, or at least the plans of whatever outfit is set to impact the environment of our beautiful southern Illinois area.
Why is such a venture out of the ordinary when it comes to concern to those in the area, considering oil drilling in southern Illinois is a long-established practice and is seen commonly throughout all the various land features in the area?
