hit and run

JEFFERSON/FRANKLIN COs., Ill. - Mount Vernon police are investigating a hit-and-run-involving a Benton man.

John Ferris, 32, of Benton, was heading home from working a shift at Continental Tire around 1 a.m. earlier this week (reportedly Monday, August 8).

Ferris was on his motorcycle and was stopped at the railroad crossing at Shawnee Road-Forest Avenue intersection waiting on an oncoming train.

An unidentified black Chevy Cavalier attempted to pass Ferris and go around the "arm guard " and beat the train, hitting the motorcycle and pushing the bike underneath the train with Ferris still on the bike.

He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, then transferred to St.Louis University Hospital.

The driver of the black Cavalier fled the scene.

If you have any information you are asked to please call the Mount Vernon Police Department at 618-242-2727.

And here's information on the GoFundMe page set up to benefit Ferris in his recovery and the expenses that will ensue.
