WILLIAMSON CO., Ill. - For concerned commuters in Marion, the billowing clouds of smoke on the southwest horizon are coming from a "prescribed burn" at the Crab Orchard Wildlife a Refuge.
Our correspondent drove to the scene and snapped these photos just west of Route 148 a mere half-mile south of Old Rt. 13.
Federal Wildlife Refuge firefighters were attending the controlled fire amongst a thick stand of pines.
The blue gray smoke curling up among the tall evergreens presented a strangely beautiful picture reminiscent of the Rocky Mountains.
The officer in charge said that the prescribed burns keep the forest healthy by burning off the undergrowth.
It is unknown just how many acres were "on fire" today, but clearly it was under control.
