FRANKLIN CO., Ill. - A former Franklin County deputy has been charged with sex crime-related charges in his county.
Christopher N. Hampton, 37, of Mulkeytown, was arrested yesterday (Thursday, October 5) following charges of Criminal Sexual Assault and Custodial Sexual Assault.
The latter generally pertains to assault of a person officially being held by a law enforcement agency regarding a crime. Details of the case, however, are scant, so it's unclear exactly how that particular charge emerged.
The incident has been described as occurring January 16, 2016, when a woman was arrested in Franklin County and when Hampton was still an employee. Apparently, when a complaint was made the very day the incident occurred, Hampton was placed on administrative leave.
An investigation was opened two days later, at which time Hampton resigned.
Hampton was jailed yesterday on a $150,000 bail ($15,000 cash bond). There is no information as to who might be representing him, but State's Attorney Evan Owen has bowed out, and an appointment of a prosecutor from the Appellate Prosecutor's office has been made.
