SALINE CO., Ill. - The young man who apparently featured himself some kind of gangsta homie from LA is now facing time in IDOC.

According to a press release from Saline County Assistant State's Attorney Jayson Clark, yesterday (April 13, 2016), Shawn D. Smith, age 21, of Maunie, Illinois entered pleas of guilty in Saline County, Illinois Circuit Court to a Class 2 felony charge of Possession of a Stolen or Converted Vehicle and a Class 4 felony charge of Aggravated Fleeing or Attempting to Eludea Police Officer.

Judge Walden E. Morris sentenced Smith to 7 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, with 2 years of mandatory supervised release on the first charge and 6 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, with 1 year of mandatory supervised release on the second charge. Pursuant to the plea agreement entered into between Smith and the Saline County State’s Attorney’s Office, Smith will also be required to pay restitution to the owner of the stolen vehicle (Smith's aunt, who called it in last year).

On July 28, 2015, the Saline County State’s Attorney’s Office filed an Information charging Smith with Possession of a Converted Vehicle and Aggravated Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer after Smith fled and attempted to elude Saline County Deputy Sheriff Michael Casteel in a stolen vehicle. Smith drove that stolen vehicle at speeds in excess of 21 miles per hour above the legal speed limit after Deputy Casteel activated his emergency lights and attempted to stop Smith’s vehicle on U.S. Route 45 in Saline County.

Smith reported that he had spent some tim in LA, which might have been where he thought he could do the high-speed-shase-in-a-stolen-car-thing and get away with it.

The investigation of Smith’s case was led by Deputy Michael Casteel of the Saline County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant State’s Attorney Jayson M. Clark handled the successful prosecution of the case.
